ALTIPLANO
Fall of the Titanic on the Titicaca sea.

Long before the film Titanic I had been travelling in a far away called Peru and had the following experience. On a beautiful morning I bordered a small wooden boat in the port of Puno. After a short while approx. 15 travellers including the team were on board.
The destination was a visit to the Uros on the reed islands. After that we went out onto the lake. After a short ride the carburettor failed and the crew had to exchange their knitting needles for tools. After many attempts it was necessary to replace the said
part and after one and a half hours we cheerfully carried on. We then went into the small village on the sun island after the hard work. We were approx. 4000 mtrs above the sea level.
Once we had lunch we had a small walk around the island with a fantastic view of the lake and the cordilleras.
There was a guide on the plaza showing the directions: Moscow, South Pole direction; Munich, New York direction; Berlin, Hawaii direction; Tokyo direction and so on.
The problem with the carburettor was fixed now.
It could have come worse and it did.
In the evening the boat was on the lake, when suddenly there was a slight formation of smoke followed by a little more. The exhaust was to close to the wood, but nobody noticed. Water was put on to extinguish the fire. First it was taken from the lake, then from the boat. On Lago Titicaca there was a small cloud of smoke rising to the moon.
Once darkness had fallen the lights of Puno could be seen in the distance.
The lifejackets were distributed, one for every two people. Nevertheless we eventually arrived in the port.
Thanks to the captain and the friendly crew with their coloured woollen hats (there were some more hats now), for the nice adventure.
This was a normal everyday occurance in South America.
